Things Which Make For Peace

[Dub McLish] THINGS WHICH MAKE FOR PEACE (Romans 14:19) “So then let us follow after things which make for peace, and things whereby we may edify one another.” --- Should NOT compromise doctrine --- Should overcome petty, immature, personality traits that divide

I. Things that Destroy Peace

A. A Desire to have one’s own way at whatever cost (Proverbs 26:21) “As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to inflame strife.”

1. Only babies constantly contend for their own way

B. A spirit of vengeance (Romans 12:17-21)

1. How many times has the peace of a church been destroyed by some brother or sister who is determined to “get even”?

C. A Dictator-Despot attitude that desires to Rule the church or Ruin it

1. Diotrophes was sharply condemned (3 John 9) “I wrote unto the church; but Diotrophes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.”

D. A Murmuring spirit (Philippians 2:14) “Do all things without murmurings and questionings.”

1. Chronic complainers can never be pleased

2. They will only discourage others and incite them to fuss and complain

II. Things that Make for Peace

A. A conscious effort to live Peacefully (Ephesians 4:3) “Giving diligence to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.”

1. Peace is not accidental, we have to work at it

B. A Total surrender to the Authority of Christ (Colossians 3:17) “And whatsoever ye do, in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

1. We won’t be stirring up strife “in Jesus’ name”

C. An Earnest attempt to treat others as we want them to treat us (Matthew 7:2) “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”

D. A Forgiving spirit (Luke 17:3) “Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.” (1 Corinthians 13:11) “Finally brethren, farewell, be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you” Remember! Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” (Matthew 5:9) Are you “at peace” with God?
